Brahma
CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Gilt copper alloy; H: 15.4 cm; National Museum of China, Beijing
This is a 15th century sculpture of Brahma, who is regarded as a protective deity in Vajrayana Buddhism. The figure rides astride a swan and carries a mirror in the left hand while the right hand rests on the right leg. Brahma wears a three-leaf crown and has pieces of jewelry adorning the body as well as a stole that seems to flutter. The swan is poised as if for flight, with its wing raised and its tail erect. |
