Mogao Cave 328: Buddha Teaching the Dharma

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This mural is located on the ceiling of the back (west) wall niche within the main chamber. The Buddha is in the center, seated with legs pendent on a throne with a square backrest. The backrest is covered by a triangular piece of fabric characteristic of images during the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties. The Buddha is flanked by two disciples and two attendant Bodhisattvas. The Bodhisattvas are seated and wear crowns and celestial garments. More Bodhisattvas, some standing and some seated with legs crossed, surround the central figures. All the Bodhisattvas have round faces, graceful postures, and make slightly different gestures. The assembly is framed by colorful clouds.
