Kumtura Cave 23: Life of the Buddha
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 6th century
This mural is located on the north wall of the main chamber. Within each square is a different scene from the Life of the Buddha, and includes the First Turning of the Dharma Wheel, the Conversion of the Three Kasyapa Brothers, the Conversion of Sariputra and Maudgalyayana, and King Virudhaka’s Massacre of the Sakya Clan. A Buddha is seated in the center of each square wearing a monastic robe that covers the left shoulder and sits either cross-ankled or in full lotus position on a rectangular throne. The Buddha is encircled by a nimbus and an aureole, and flames are painted over the shoulders. The Buddha’s hands form various mudras. Surrounding the Buddha are Bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, or monks which indicate the particular theme of each image. |
