Gongxian Cave 1: Vimalakirti

CHINA, Henan, Zhengzhou; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Stone
Four niches are located on the east wall of the cave. This well-preserved carving is found within the first niche on the left. It depicts Vimalakirti in discussion with Manjusri.
Vimalakirti sits in relaxation posture on a lotus throne, wearing a loose robe tied at the waist. He has a slim physique, long earlobes, and closed eyes. One hand holds a whisk up high, while the other hand rests at the waist. His peaceful expression and elegant posture convey a sense of calmness.
