Maitreya Buddha

NEPAL; 11th–12th century; Gilt copper alloy; H: 22.2 cm; Asia Society Museum, New York, USA
Maitreya sits with legs pendent and his right hand held in the vitarka (teaching) mudra. The hair is in snail-shell ringlets and the brow is broad above a graceful face with regular features. The head looks downwards, supported on a neck showing the three lines of a great person. A seamless monastic robe clings to the body, only indicated by the hem about the neck and the ruffled folds defining the shape of the square throne. The scene depicted is of the Buddha teaching under the dragon flower tree after he descends to this world.
