Java: Vairocana Buddha

The statue was unearthed from Java and depicts Vairocana seated in half lotus position on a double lotus throne with hands held in the bodhyangi (wisdom fist) mudra. The mudra is particularly associated with this Buddha. The figure wears a five-leaf crown with a cylindrical stupa located at the top. An oval nimbus rimmed with flames supports a high canopy. The head is rounded, the body stocky and richly adorned with various pieces of jewelry. The back of the throne is angular and decorated at the top with a pair of cloud ornaments that protrude out and upwards on a level with the figure’s shoulders. The circular base of the throne is decorated with incised patterns and rests on a square Sumeru base. |
