Songgwangsa Temple: Banner Pole
SOUTH KOREA, South Jeolla, Suncheon; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392); Gilt bronze; H: 104.3 cm; Ho Am Art Museum, Yongin, South Korea
This banner pole was listed as National Treasure No. 136 in 1971. It was displayed with a banner attached during Buddhist ceremonies, and has a two-layer Sumeru base with images between the pilasters and a lotus petal pattern. The pole resembles a bamboo stem, which is held in place by two supports. The pole tapers towards the top and is surmounted by a vibrant dragon's head, which is portrayed in delicate detail. |
