Hand-Held Incense Burner
KOREA; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), dated 1077; Bronze; H: 14.7 cm; National Museum of Korea, Seoul, South Korea
This portable incense burner is a Dharma instrument used by monastics to make offerings to the Buddha. From the inscription on the base it is known that it was created in 1077.
The base resembles a lotus leaf, from which the stem, in the form of a bracket arm, extends upwards to support the lotus bud bowl. The delicate veins of the lotus leaf are in contrast with the sturdy bowl. |
