Sarnath: Buddha and Attendants

The Buddha and his two smaller attendants stand upon separate lotus pedestals. The composition is framed by an arched back screen on which a pair of apsaras hover. The Buddha's diaphanous robe covers both shoulders and clings to the body. The left hand tightens the fold about that arm, while the robe falls from both wrists to the level of the shins. The right hand is webbed and raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra. The Bodhisattvas hold the hand nearest the Buddha at their waist. The one on the right is in tribhanga posture and carries a lotus, while the other stands upright with a whisk over the right shoulder. |
