Niya Temple 93A35: Heavenly Beings

CHINA, Xinjiang, Hotan; circa 3rd century; Wood; H: 64 cm; Xinjiang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, Urumqi, China
These fragments were discovered at the Niya Temple 93A35 in 1995. They were used as ground poles in the lecture hall. There are carvings on both sides and depict heavenly beings. It is possible to discern from the outline a topknot, earrings, and robes with rippling hems. One arm is raised while the other arm rests on the waist. Simple black lines were used to outline the facial features, though most of these lines have faded. Black marks resembling the four fingers can also be found on the waist.
