Dandan Oilik Monastery:Standing Buddha
CHINA, Xinjiang, Hotan; 6th century; Ink and color on wood; 26.4 x 13 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
This is a wooden board with a standing Buddha painted in color on both sides. The Buddhas have a nimbus and a mandorla, and the left hand probably form the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra, but they wear different colored robes. The color on the nimbus of one of the Buddhas has faded. His face is outlined in red. The folds of the monastic robe are drawn in black lines, suggesting that the painter was influenced by Gandharan art. |
