Mogao Cave 249: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Western Wei dynasty (535–556); Clay; H: 2.4 m
This Buddha sits with legs pendent on a throne within the large arched niche in the center of the back (west) wall. The Buddha is tall and slim, with a serene expression. The hands are both damaged. The left hand reaches forward while the right rests on the knee. The figure wears an inner robe tied at the chest and a brown outer monastic robe with delicate curving folds. The head of the Buddha was reconstructed during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), and does not conform to the original style. A flaming mandorla is painted on the wall behind the figure.
