Bezeklik Cave 20: Figure Holding a Lamp

CHINA, Xinjiang, Turpan; circa 9th-10th century; 64.2 x 25.7 cm; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany
Originally located on the right side of the doorway to the main chamber in Cave 20, this figure has a round, fleshy face with wide eyes, long hair, curly eyebrows, and exposed lower fangs. The figure wears a blue hat and is dressed in an elaborate military uniform and overcoat. Kneeling with both hands raised, the figure holds an oil lamp upward, making an offering.
The painting was outlined using a line drawing technique upon which multiple colors were applied. Stylistically, the figure is elegant and detailed, and the drawing method appears to have been influenced by the culture of the Central Plains region.
