Donghwasa Temple: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, Daegu; Unified Silla dynasty (668-935); Granite; H: 106 cm
This Buddha is sculpted in mid-relief on the concave surface of a tall rock to the right of the entrance of Donghwasa Temple. The Buddha sits at ease on a lotus throne above swirling clouds. He wears a monastic robe and forms the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The intersecting aureole and nimbus radiate outwards, and their rims are carved with vigorous flame motifs. The style is typical of Unified Silla dynasty. The carving was listed as Treasure No. 243 in 1963.
