Ayutthaya: Bodhi Tree
THAILAND, Ayutthaya; 17th–18th century; Stone; H: 48 cm; Bangkok National Museum, Thailand
This rare stone Bodhi Tree excavated from Ayutthaya may have formed part of a statue of the meditating Buddha. The piece was discovered in an excavation trench. The fragment is oval and consists of a columnar central trunk from which branches grow symmetrically. The foliage is depicted in such a way that the leaves hanging from the inner branches can also be seen. The carving is so intricate that the veins are visible in each individual leaf. |
