Yarhu Forest of Stupas

CHINA, Xinjiang
Located in the northernmost area of the ancient city of Yarhu, the forest of stupas consists of 101 stupas, and is one of the most spectacular complexes of the city. According to carbon dating, the structures were built no later than the Northern Dynasties period (386-581).
The stupas were surrounded by walls measuring 85 m from east to west and 87 m from south to north. There is a doorway in the center of the remains of the south wall. At the center of the site, there is a large stupa with an existing height of 5 m. It is the oldest stupa in China with a diamond throne layout. The central stupa is surrounded by four squares containing 25 small stupas. These small stupas have collapsed and only their bases remain.
