Wat Muang: Great Buddha
THAILAND, Ang Thong; Dated 2007; Cement; H: 92 m
The foundation for what was planned at the time to be the world 's tallest seated Buddha was laid in 1991. The statue has a height of 92 m and a span of 62 m from knee to knee. It took 16 years to complete and cost more than a hundred million Thai baht.
Despite appearing contemporary, the statue has been created in the Sukhothai (circa 1238–1438) style. There is a pointed flame ornament above the usnisa. The tips of the elongated earlobes are slightly upturned and the three lines on the neck are also visible. The figure is seated on a plain lotus throne in half lotus position, with the right hand in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. A tight-fitting monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare, and it is smooth except for the neatly folded edge over the left shoulder. |
