Head of a Buddha
CHINA; circa 3rd–4th century; Bronze; H: 13.6 cm; Hirayama Ikuo Silk Road Museum, Hokuto, Japan
The sculpture is believed to have been unearthed from Hotan in Xinjiang. The head is obviously male, since a mustache is visible and other facial features include almond-shaped eyes and a well-defined nose. Well combed hair is raked back and confined with a band around the middle before forming a flattened topknot. There was originally a mandorla behind the statue but only a small part remains on one side of the head. The bronze statue is hollow and the material that was used to shape it is still present in the interior. |
