Kumtura Cave 13: Buddha Teaching the Dharma

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; 9th century
This mural is located on the north side of the barrel-vaulted ceiling. It depicts three continuous rows of Buddha triads. Three rows of figures are still visible on the damaged ceiling, and each row is divided by a flowing cloud pattern. Flowers, a parasol, and musical instruments tied with ribbons are floating between the Buddha images. The musical instruments include flutes, panpipes, harps, and reed instruments. Each Buddha wears an inner and outer monastic robe, while each Bodhisattva wears a headdress and a dhoti.
