Seven Buddhas on a Lotus Stand

Seven Buddhas on a Lotus Stand

CHINA; Sui to Tang dynasty (581–907); Gilt bronze; H: 22.8 cm; Nezu Museum, Tokyo, Japan
The Buddhas wear monastic robes in different styles and have their hands in various mudras. Each figure measures approximately 10 cm in height, and has an openwork nimbus with a flaming surround. The nimbuses were cast separately and later affixed to the figures. The Buddhas are each seated in full lotus positions on a lotus throne, which is linked to a pentagonal stand by twining lotus stalks. Small votive objects such as this sculpture were typical of this early period.
