Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva
CHINA; Qing dynasty (1644-1911), dated 1674; By Shitao; Ink on paper; 193.6 x 81.3 cm; Shanghai Museum, China
This picture of Avalokitesvara sitting at the edge of a stream was painted by Shitao when he was 33 years old. The Bodhisattva has delicate facial features and wears a white robe draped over the head and wrapped around the hands and legs. A vase containing a willow branch is painted on the left. There are rocks, bamboo shoots, and shadows behind the Bodhisattva. The rocks and flowing water are depicted with wave-like lines, filled in with light ink, and accented with dark dots, exemplifying Shitao's simple yet expressive style. |
