Mogao Cave 17: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on linen; 166 x 52 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
This painting, discovered in Mogao Cave 17, portrays Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva with a high topknot and a crown that appears to be decorated with a Buddha image. Long hair forms a black silhouette around the shoulders and upper arms. The Bodhisattva wears ornaments, a red shawl, and stoles. The left hand probably displays the vitarka (teaching) mudra while the fingers of the right hand hold a transparent bowl containing a lotus flower. |
