Zhenguo Temple Ten Thousand Buddha Hall: Seated Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Shanxi, Jinzhong; Northern Han Kingdom (951–979), dated 963; Clay; H: 290 cm
These two seated Bodhisattvas are positioned between the disciples and standing Bodhisattvas. They are positioned at an angle. Both are seated on Sumeru thrones in the relaxation posture with opposite legs hanging down to rest on a lotus support. The long hair of the figures is wound in a braid about the head and also swept into a high topknot. A decorated mantle with ornate shoulder-pieces is fastened over a short-sleeved upper garment over the longer sleeves of another garment. A colorful skirt hangs over the legs. The clinging material outlining the shape of the legs hangs over the edge of the throne. The figures represent the detailed work of the Five Dynasties (907–960).
