According to the inscription in the bottom left corner, this painting dates from 1286 and was comissioned by Yeum Seung-ik, the favorite general of the king and queen. The painting features Amitabha Buddha wearing a red monastic robe and a cyan dhoti. The Buddha appears to be moving to the right as he glances back over his shoulder. There are two blossoming white lotuses by his feet. The nimbus, the usnisa, the swastika on the Buddhas chest, and the intricate patterns on the robes are all painted in bright gold. The precisely dated inscription makes this painting a valuable source for the study of Buddhist art during the Goryeo dynasty. |
