Baoding: Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna Buddhas
CHINA, Hebei, Baoding; Sui dynasty (581–618), dated 606; Commissioned by Luo Wen; Gilt bronze; H: 37.5 cm; Tianjin Museum, China
The statue was discovered in Beifu, a town in Baoding in 1957. It depicts two Buddhas seated side by side within a single flame-rimmed mandorla. Both Buddhas raise the right hand in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra and sit with legs crossed on a platform supported on an ornately engraved base with four legs. Two rows of figures line the sides, each consisting of a Bodhisattva, a donor, and a disciple. The disciple on the left is missing, but his presence is suggested by a mortise hole.
The base rests on a larger four-footed support. A censer is secured to its front edge. An inscription dates the statue to 606 and identifies Luo Wen as the donor. |
