Mogao Cave 320: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This image is painted to the left of the niche on the back (west) wall. The Bodhisattva wears a crown with a Buddha image in the center, and has ornaments adorning the chest along with a silk stole draped across the upper body. The figure gazes downward, holding a vase in the left hand and a willow branch in the right. A long lower garment is tied around the narrow waist and the body is turned slightly to one side. The Bodhisattva stands barefoot on lotus pedestals. Though the skin has blackened from oxidation over time, other colors such as green, white, and orange remain vivid on the clothing and adornments of the Bodhisattva. |
