Nanchong White Pagoda

The pagoda is situated onHemingshan (Crane CryMountain). It was constructed duringthe rule of Emperor Taizu (reigned 960-976) of the Northern Song dynasty andis one of Sichuan’s rare Song dynasty(960-1279) pagodas. It was listed as aNational Cultural Heritage Site in 2006.
The 13-story, square, brick pagoda is37.1 m high. The base consists of stoneslabs. The architectural elements, suchas the architraves and bracket sets, areconstructed from gray brick. Each wallis separated into three bays by pilasters.
The eaves consist of corbeling with acourse of dogtooth bricks below. Fromthe second to tenth stories, the wallscontain 108 niches that once housedBuddha statues. The pagoda is hollowand access can be gained from the firststory. From the first to fourth storiesthere is a spiral staircase. The spire isincomplete and consists of an invertedbowl with a cast-iron canopy. |
