Western Thousand Buddha Cave 8: Bodhisattvas and Apsaras

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Zhou dynasty (557–581)
An illustration of the Buddha Teaching the Dharma is located on the west side of the central pillar. These figures are on the upper left register of that mural. The standing Bodhisattvas wear various styles of headdresses, long, draped stoles, and lower garments. Their nimbuses and garments are painted in various colors. They make differing gestures, such as joining palms, forming mudras, or holding a lotus. Asparas fly above the Bodhisattvas at the very top, with their lower garments and stoles trailing behind them.
