Huayan Lower Temple Bhagavad Sutra Hall: Sakyamuni Buddha

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Liao dynasty (907–1125), dated 1038; Clay; H: 5.38 m
The statue of Sakyamuni, along with Maitreya and Dipamkara in the Bhagavad Sutra Hall, are known as the Buddhas of the Past, Present, and Future. Sakyamuni is shown seated in full lotus position on a four-layered lotus throne. One of the hands is placed on the knee while the other hand is raised in lotus mudra. The Buddha wears a monastic robe that is open at the front and shows the inner robe. A layered nimbus and intersecting aureole behind the figure is surrounded by a flame-patterned mandorla made from painted wood.
