Kizil Cave 161: Life of the Buddha - Parinirvana

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 6th–7th century
Located above the entrance to the main chamber, this mural displays Sakyamuni Buddha reclining on the right side with legs resting one atop the other. The Buddha is encircled by a nimbus and an aureole, and wears a monastic robe that covers both shoulders. Next to the Buddha’s head are disciples, while Brahma, Sakra, and a row of heavenly warriors stand above him. At the Buddha’s feet kneels Mahakasyapa, who reaches out with both hands to touch them. This painting is the only mural of the Buddha’s Parinirvana within the Kizil Caves that is still preserved in its entirety.
