Mogao Cave 17: Standing Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Five Dynasties (907–960); Line drawing on dark blue silk; 345.7 x 28.5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
Discovered in Mogao Cave 17, this mid-10th century banner is decorated with images of four Bodhisattvas, the last of which is mostly obscured by damage. The Bodhisattvas have similar appearances, although each one wears a different hair ornament. All four stand barefooted on lotus pedestals, with their palms joined. They wear headdresses, earrings, necklaces, armlets, and bracelets.
The banner is made of deep blue silk, and the Bodhisattvas are depicted in thick yellow lines painted with strong, vigorous strokes.
