Dubu Cave: Mythical Creatures

CHINA, Tibet, Zanda; Guge Kingdom (circa 10th-17th century), circa 11th-13th century
This mural is located in the antechamber of Dubu Cave. It depicts a white Dharma protector holding a wish-fulfilling jewel, and two dancing figures with human bodies and the heads of animals. Each of the dancing figures wears only a loincloth; the one on the left holds a bow and arrow and stands in a fighting posture, while the figure on the right holds a sword and is in the dancing posture. The Dharma protector on the left is shown springing forth from a lotus. There is a red nimbus behind the head. The Dharma protector is colored vividly, in contrast with the carefully shaded animal-headed figures.
