Hanshan and Shide in a Boat

CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); By Zhu Sansong; Bamboo; H: 5.2 cm; Palace Museum, Beijing, China
Created by Zhu Sansong, this sculpture of Hanshan and Shide depicts the two infamous Tang dynasty (618-907) monks in a lotus petal-shaped boat. The scene expresses the essence of true companionship.
Both figures have smiles which are broad and bright. Hanshan sits on the left side and paddles the boat with a large oar; Shide is positioned to the right, holding a fan in his right hand and on his left palm, there is a spider. Hanshan is clad in a loose robe that covers one shoulder and reveals the muscles of his upper body. Shide, on the other hand, is completely covered by his robe.
