Hokekyoji Temple: Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna Buddhas

JAPAN, Chiba, Ichikawa; Nanbokucho period (1336–1392), dated 1335; By Oyu and Oen; Wood
The sculpture illustrates the “Chapter on the Emergence of the Prabhutaratna Pagoda” from the Lotus Sutra in which Sakyamuni is joined in his teaching by Prabhutaratna Buddha. According to a text found inside the base, the piece was made in 1335 by the craftsmen Oyu and Oen.
The two Buddhas sit cross-legged on separate lotus platforms mounted on an octagonal stand that rests on a reversed lotus. Beneath the reversed lotus, there are three more octagonal tiers with sides decorated with various designs. The robed figures are painted in gold and join their palms in anjali (reverence) mudra.
