Ih Juu Monastery: Third Dalai Lama

CHINA, Inner Mongolia, Hohhot; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); Gilt copper alloy; H: 140 cm
Sonam Gyatso, the Third Dalai Lama, introduced the Gelug teachings of Tibetan Buddhism into the Mongolian regions during the 16th century. As a consequence, he was given the title of Dalai Lama by the then ruler, Altan Khan, in 1578. The title was later conferred onto two predecessors. This statue of him wears the yellow monastic hat of the Gelug school. One hand is raised in vitarka (teaching) mudra while the figure smiles benevolently.
