Ajanta Cave 26: Seated Buddha

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad; circa mid-to-late 5th century; Stone
This Buddha is enshrined within a niche at the front of the stupa. The rectangular niche is framed by an elaborate lintel and two pillars with round floriated capitals. The Buddha is seated upon a throne with legs pendent. He has his characteristic hair curled in the snail-shell form, a prominent usnisa, and a square face with long earlobes. The figure is tall with broad shoulders, and wears a diaphanous robe. The Buddha’s feet rest on a lotus pedestal. Two elephants are carved facing inward on either side of the pedestal, and above them are two lions. In the top corners of the niche are apsaras, and the remaining space on the back wall of the niche is embellished with floral patterns.
