Sakyamuni Buddha

THAILAND; Dvaravati Kingdom (circa 6th–13th century), 8th–9th century; Sandstone; H: 82.6 cm; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California, USA
This Mon statue, from the Dvaravati Kingdom (circa 6th–13th century) is unique in its mixture of styles. The rectangular outline of the translucent monastic robe is typical of the Indian Pala period (circa 8th–12th century), while the meticulous emphasis on the way the robe drapes from the forearms may be from a pre-Angkor period (circa 9th–15th century). Similarities to sculptures from Nalanda and Kurkihar that date to the 7th and 8th centuries led to an 8th to 9th century dating of the work.
