Seated Buddha

CHINA; Tang dynasty (618–907); Dry lacquer; H: 96.5 cm; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA
The Buddha has a rounded usnisa and hollowed earlobes. The face has a broad forehead which is divided by deep eyebrows. The Buddha sits cross-legged, absorbed in meditation. He wears a monastic robe across the left shoulder that falls over the legs in realistically depicted folds. Although the hands are missing, the posture of the arms suggests that they may have formed the dhyana (meditation) mudra. This figure bears traces of gilt and pigment.
