Bedsa Cave 7: Mithuna Couples

INDIA, Maharashtra, Pune; circa 2nd century BCE-1st century CE
These mithuna couples are carved on the column capitals within the portico of Cave 7. The male and female couples are natural and well-proportioned, and are seated upon kneeling elephants, horses, cows, and lions. Each sculpture is situated above four corbeled layers of stone. Riding mithuna couple images were common embellishments during this time and can also be found in Karla Cave 8, Nasik Cave 3, and Kanheri Cave 3.
