Mogao Cave 268: Ceiling
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Liang Kingdom (397–439)
This ceiling is in the main chamber of Cave 268. The pattern consists of a diamond-in-square motif with raised bands similar to a latticework. The central square is embellished with a circular lotus, while apsaras are painted on the interleaves. The colors are predominantly ocher red, mineral green, and white. The apsaras in the outermost corners are especially vivid. They are posed gracefully in flight and wear flowing stoles and lower garments. |
