Chaoyang North Pagoda: Heavenly Being
CHINA, Liaoning, Chaoyang; Liao dynasty (907–1125); Jade; L: 4.5 cm; Beita Museum, Chaoyang, Liaoning, China
This heavenly being was recovered from the heavenly palace of Chaoyang North Pagoda in 1988. It is carved on one side of a single piece of jade and measures 2.6 cm high and 4.5 cm long. It was originally part of a pendant.
The heavenly being wears an unusual headgear with a flap hanging down. The upper body is bare with a stole around the shoulders, and a dhoti wrapped around the lower body. Both legs are extended behind as the figure flies through the air. |
