Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; 12th century; Gilt bronze; H: 37.1 cm; Daisenji Temple, Tottori, Japan
The Bodhisattva stands holding a jewel in one hand and a vase in the other, The Bodhisattva wears an ornate headdress with an image of Amitabha Buddha. Pendants fall to the shoulders from brackets on the headdress to join the scattered locks of hair. The figure wears a large amount of intricate jewelry and a number of stoles, one of which cascades to the floor on either side of the skirt. The statue was probably created during the 12th century, either during the Northern Song (960-1127) or Liao (907-1125) dynasties. It is listed as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
