Sisophon: Four-Armed Avalokitesvara

The statue was unearthed at Sisophon and was sculpted before the Angkor period (circa 9th–15th century). Avalokitesvara is in the four-armed form and stands on a double lotus pedestal with a seated image of the Buddha fronting the two-tier conical crown. Two arms rise from behind the broken pair at the front and may once have held attributes. The body is unadorned except for a lower garment tied with a sash. The lips are thick and the eyes may have once had inlaid pupils. The surface of the sculpture has been polished smooth. There are perforations at the back of the upper body and lower legs, obviously used to insert some type of support. |
