Sakyamuni Buddha

INDIA; circa 9th century; Brass; H: 11 cm; National Museum of China, Beijing
The simplicity of design marks this Buddha as a work from the Kashmir region. The figure's hair and the folds of the robes are lightly incised and only the hem is molded. The Buddha's head is set on neck three lines. He sits in full lotus position on an oval, double lotus base. The eyebrows are incised but the eyes are strikingly inlaid with silver. The tight fitting monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare. The right hand hangs over the knee in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra, while the left hand is turned inward at the chest.
