Gatbawi Stone Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, Daegu
This 9th century statue is carved from a tilted granite boulder on the eastern end of the Palgongsan mountain range. It was listed as Treasure No. 431 in 1965.
A flat slab, 15 cm thick, rests on top of the Buddha’s usnisa. Thus, the statue has been named the Gatbawi (Stone Hat) Buddha. The 400 cm high figure, presumed to be the Medicine Buddha, sits in full lotus position and holds a medicine bowl in the left hand. Though the body is simply carved, the face is carefully detailed.
