Toling Monastery White Hall: Opening Ceremony

CHINA, Tibet, Ngari; Guge Kingdom (circa 10th–17th century), 15th century
This 15th century mural is painted on the right side of the east wall in the White Hall. The upper register depicts the opening ceremony for the monastery. Tibetan-style buildings are arranged in orderly rows with trees interspersed between them. A procession of monks holding alms bowls makes its way towards the central hall.
The lower register illustrates the joyous celebration with scenes of music and dance. Women dance with long scarves wrapped around their heads and arms while young boys play musical instruments. Other figures carry banners, canopies, or flags. Stylized trees are painted between the figures.
