Vairocana Buddha
INDIA / PAKISTAN; circa 9th–10th century; Bronze; H: 33 cm; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA
Vairocana is presented in his aspect of all-encompassing wisdom and therefore incorporates all five of the Dhyani Buddhas into the three-leaf crown, where they are seated around the stupa. Ribbons attached to sidepieces hang downward in stylized curves. A stole twines over the arms that are raised as the hands form a mudra where the right fist grasps the left forefinger. The upper body is ornamented with jewelry. The figure sits in full lotus position upon a cushion supported by seven lions standing on a double lotus pedestal. |
