Seated Buddha

CHINA; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577); Marble; H: 64.5 cm; Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
This slender Buddha is seated upon a Sumeru lotus throne with an eight-sided pedestal carved in relief. Behind the Buddha's head is a radiating lotus nimbus. The face is serene and the figure sits upright in a half lotus posture. A monastic robe is worn over an inner robe that leaves the right shoulder bare. The clothing is so detailed that it has often been used as a study for the way monastic robes were worn during the Northern Qi dynasty (550–577). The right hand is raised in the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra while the left hand faces downwards on the knee, with the thumb touching the index finger.
