Seokguram Grotto: Sakyamuni Buddha
SOUTH KOREA, North Gyeongsang, Gyeongju; Unified Silla dynasty (668–935); Stone; H: 3.26 m
This Sakyamuni Buddha statue is located in the center of the main chamber and is Seokguram Grotto’s main Buddha sculpture. The Buddha is seated in full lotus position on a 1.33 m high Sumeru throne. The figure’s expression is solemn and dignified. The right hand forms the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra, while the left hand is placed in front of the abdomen. The folds of the robe hanging over the left shoulder are smooth. A nimbus carved with a lotus pattern along its edge is seen on the wall behind the Buddha. |
