Portable Shrine with Buddha Triad

KOREA; Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), circa 1450; Gilt bronze; H: 28 cm; National Museum of Korea, Seoul, South Korea
The shrine is in the form of a miniature temple. It has a single hip roof with ridge ornaments at either end and in the middle. Corrugated tiles and ridge caps are depicted in exquisite detail.
The scene inside the shrine features a central Buddha flanked by two Bodhisattvas on high thrones, surrounded by disciples. The Buddha has a jewel on his usnisa and a swastika on his chest. The interior of each door has a depiction of a Dharma protector with four Heavenly Kings on the exterior of the doors.
Buddhist illustrative work from the early Joseon period was often taken from the illustration of sutras. One of the characteristics of that time is that the walls of temples were filled with images.
